Our land is the Metapontino area, an ancient land, the cradle of Magna Graecia and the first fennel production area in Italy. In fact, it was the Greeks who brought it to our peninsula for the first time.
Here Dolce Lucano is born, the excellent fennel from Basilicata, cultivated with care and passion by the producers of Primo Sole.
Our soils rich in potassium and mineral salts give it a bright white color and crunchiness; the temperature range of our valleys favors the production of essential oils, which make it sweet and aniciate.
It has a unique flavour: we recommend tasting it raw, bite after bite.

Did you know that fennel gave its name to a legendary place? In ancient Greek times its name was “marathon”, from which Marathon derives. In fact, on the plain of the famous battle that saw the Athenians and Persians face each other, fennel grew spontaneously. The link between this plant and the Metaponto plain appears almost obvious, as the city of Metaponto was founded by the Greeks between the mouths of the Bradano and Basento rivers. Many medical properties were attributed to fennel in the past, as attested by the writings of Galen and Dioscorides; furthermore Hippocrates prescribes fennel seeds if women lack milk. Today fennel is known above all for its digestive and purifying properties. It is composed mainly of water; among the minerals the most present is potassium and contains vitamin A, vitamin C and some B vitamins. It is fairly rich in flavonoids and is low in calories.
